detachment

my friends would say one day, dear,
you won't notice when it disappears
like a thread stretched so thin
that within a flinch, it abruptly snaps

slice open my reality
carry the stream of wine-stained memories
down to the gravity’s pull
a separation in diplomacy.
or so I’d visualize
the taste of your words
sour my tongue overnight
so long
the swirl of liquor that perfumed my sweet dreams
humming innocence in our sunlit home
got her cradle in a fresh coat of cream.
my friends would say one day, dear,
you won't notice when it disappears
like drifting off at the last chapter
eyes open to blurry ink and crinkled letters
while pages slip off your fingers bend

or so I’d visualize
vices once were passports
to migrate from my woes
have been replaced with different hues
of a new belief system
stop the knife from twisting
the lie of its overdue existence
learning to distinguish
love and self preservation
love and attachment
love and detachment.
